Here’s what I do.
On a typical day I just talk to people, using the technique below: smile, ask how they’re doing, strike up a conversation. Sometimes it leads to a photograph, other times just a conversation. But to expand the program I’m printing up cards that explain it. That way people can take a card, learn a little bit about the project and hopefully spread the word.
Here’s the card now in production:
Here’s what you can do: start by establishing eye contact and remember to smile.
The first most important thing to know is the opening line from Wooden Ships, the David Crosby/Stephen Stills song: “If you smile at me, I will understand, ‘cause that is something everybody everywhere does in the same language.” There is no better way to make a connection with a stranger.
The second most important thing to know is that most people like it when you show genuine interest in who they are and what they’re doing. We all want to be recognized, and not just via likes on Facebook or Instagram.
So if you believe like I do that connecting with strangers is good for all of us, or if you are merely open to the idea, or if you are just willing to give it a chance here is pretty much all you need to do.
Turn toward someone, anyone, though preferably someone not like you.
Smile.
Show consideration: If you are both standing or sitting and they’re not in a rush ask how they’re doing.
Be kind: Offer a compliment, or ask where they got something they are wearing or carrying.
Be curious: Pose a question, depending on what they’re doing — waiting for a subway (where are they going?), working on a construction site (what’s getting built?), pan handling (how’s business today?)
See where things go.
It may take a little bit of effort if you are an introvert, but my guess is that the acceptance you’ll receive will start to make it easier.
